Rendez-Vous: A New Chapter in Brussels’ Art Scene

Article
From the 12th to the 15th of September 2024, Rendez-Vous will take centre stage, replacing the Brussels Gallery Weekend, which recently announced its cancellation after 16 years. This new artistic organisation will kick-start the artistic year with a series of openings, performances, and get-togethers in the art galleries of Belgium’s capital.

Bringing together more than 45 contemporary art galleries, the founders Laure Decock and Evelyn Simons want to place Brussels on the international art agenda by showcasing the city's diverse contemporary art scene. They say: “For us and for many, Brussels is a unique place. Conveniently central, discreetly humble - surrounded by big sisters such as London and Paris, but brimming with a creative energy that is ferocious.”

With over a decade’s experience in Brussels' art world, the founders bring complementary backgrounds to the table. Laure has worked with galleries such as Almine Rech Gallery, Albert Baronian and Axel Vervoordt, and as a fundraising consultant for WIELS, La Loge and Netwerk Aalst. She was also a founding member of Elders Collectief. Evelyn has curated for institutions such as Fondazione Prada, Casino Luxemburg, and KANAL, and held artistic directorial roles at Horst Arts & Music and Fondation CAB. She also regularly writes for national and international art magazines. For them, Brussels is a place “[w]here young artists can still afford to live and create, whilst a network of immaculate galleries, renowned institutions and experimental artist-run spaces offer a plethora of impressive exhibitions and transdisciplinary events. [...]. An inspiring melting pot for local and international artists, curators, gallerists, researchers, philosophers, collectors and art dealers.”

This September, Rendez-Vous will present a “soft launch” with a fresh identity, setting the stage for even more ambitious and diverse plans in 2025. Alongside exhibitions from participating galleries - featuring established names like Xavier Hufkens, rodolphe janssen, Galerie Greta Meert, and Baronian, as well as newcomers Gauli Zitter, Grège, KIN gallery, and Lodovico Corsini - Rendez-Vous will offer various arty itineraries.
