The annual Wiki Edit-a-Thon, in which volunteers come together (online, for this year’s edition) to update and create new Wikipedia profiles, this year focused on female artists of the African diaspora.

Held on August 11 by Wikimedia DC, Wikipedia’s official outreach organisation for the region, and non-profit organisation Art+Feminism, Black Artists Matter saw 85 articles edited and two new profiles created for artists in the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ collection. The editing process consists of far more than merely proofing, with a total of 17,200 words added across the articles, and 180 additional references included to pages primarily featuring Black women.

This year’s Edit-a-Thon sought to address the imbalance of representation on the free online encyclopedia. The absence of Black and female artists on the site mirrors their absence in museum collections, with 85.4% of works in institutional collections belonging to white artists, and 87.4% by men (according to a survey by Williams College researchers of 18 major US museums).

Today’s event was great and really speaks to our overall mission: Art+Feminism is an intersectional feminist non-profit organization that directly addresses the information gap about gender, feminism, and the arts on the iinterne. Our work is centered on building an equitable global community striving to close the gaps in content and editorial representation on Wikipedia, ensuring that the histories of our lives and work are accessible and accurate,” Art+Feminism executive director Kira Wisniewski told Hyperallergic.
