Eric Lefebvre announced as new director of Musée Cernuschi

Eric Lefebvre will take up his new role as director of the Musée Cernuschi, commencing June 1. He succeeds Christine Shimizu following her retirement from the Parisian institution specializing in Asian art.

A specialist in Chinese painting, Eric Lefebvre studied at INALCO (National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations), the Ecole du LouvrePeking University and China’s National Academy of Fine Arts. Lefebvre is familiar to to the Musée Cernuschi and was curator of the museum’s Chinese collections for ten years (2003-2013). Lefebvre has been working at the Musée Guimet since 2013, where he curated the recent exhibition “Splendeur des Han, essor de l’empire Céleste” that closed in March. The exhibition, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations, preceded the “Paris-Chinese painting” event in Hong Kong of which Eric Lefebvre also managed.

He replaces Christine Shimizu who is a renowned specialist in Japanese art and who began her career at the Musée Guimet in charge of the Japanese art department. She then became chief curator at the musée national de la céramique (National Museum of Ceramics) in Sèvres from 1993 to 2010, responsible for the Asian and Islamic ceramic art collection. She took up the helm at the Musée Cernuschi in 2011, and now leaves her role in the hands of Eric Lefebre.
